Candle Gazing Meditation
Concentrating on a candle flame to develop focus, calm the mind, and access deeper states of consciousness.
Trataka (candle gazing) is practiced in both Zen and Yoga traditions. Sit in darkness with a candle at eye level, three to four feet away. Gaze softly at the flame without blinking until tears form, then close your eyes and hold the after-image. This practice dramatically improves concentration, calms the nervous system, and may stimulate the pineal gland. The flame becomes a symbol of consciousness itself - steady yet dynamic, illuminating yet consuming. Studies show that trataka reduces anxiety and improves visual memory and recall.
