What is the Sound of One Hand?
The famous koan that breaks conceptual thinking.
You know the sound of two hands clapping - what is the sound of one hand? This question cannot be answered by thinking. It exhausts the rational mind until direct insight arises. The answer isn't found but realized.
Hakuin used this koan to test realization. It points to mind before concepts.

- What Zen says about doubt
Hakuin's koan does on purpose what despair does by accident — it exhausts thinking. You know the sound of two hands; the question withdraws the second hand and leaves you holding nothing. The tradition says the answer is realized, never found.
