Elders and Authority
The role of elders in maintaining knowledge, law, and community welfare.
Elders hold authority based on their knowledge, wisdom, and ceremonial standing. They are custodians of sacred knowledge, arbiters of disputes, and guides for the community. Respect for elders is fundamental to Aboriginal society.
The elders carry the knowledge. Without them, we would be lost.
Elder authority represents merit-based rather than age-based hierarchy.

- What Aboriginal tradition says about elders and knowledge
Elders hold authority because of what they know and the ceremonies they stand in, and they act as arbiters in disputes. Their standing is functional rather than ceremonial decoration.
