Achara Rasayana — The Behavioral Rejuvenative
Achara Rasayana ('behavioral Rasayana') is Ayurveda's teaching that the most powerful rejuvenation comes not from herbs but from virtuous conduct, truthfulness, non-violence, and equanimity — the lifestyle of wisdom.
Charaka describes a category of Rasayana that requires no herbs or treatments — only the sustained practice of virtuous living. He lists the qualities of Achara Rasayana: truthfulness (Satya), freedom from anger (Akrodha), abstinence from alcohol (Anasuya), non-violence (Ahimsa), peaceful conduct (Shanta), respect for teachers and elders (Guru-deva-dvija-bhakti), cleanliness (Sauchatva), charitable giving (Dana), and contentment (Tushti). Charaka states that one who practices these qualities gains longevity, mental clarity, good reputation, and freedom from disease — equivalent to the best herbal Rasayana. This teaching positions ethical and psychological health as physiologically regenerative — a claim now supported by research on how positive emotions, purpose, forgiveness, and social connection reduce allostatic load, telomere attrition, and inflammatory markers.
Truth, non-violence, freedom from anger, peaceful conduct — these are the greatest Rasayana, giving long life, clarity, and freedom from disease.
Charaka's Achara Rasayana holds that truthfulness, freedom from anger, reverence for elders and teachers, compassion, charity, and self-restraint act as a Rasayana in their own right — conduct that rejuvenates without a single herb. It is listed in the Chikitsasthana alongside the material tonics, not as a metaphor but as a named category of rejuvenation.

- What Ayurveda says about a steady mind
The behavioural rejuvenative is a list of conducts, among them truthfulness, freedom from anger, calm conduct, giving and contentment, said to do what the best preparations do. It is the tradition's clearest statement that how you behave is itself treatment.
- What Ayurveda says about growing old
Achara Rasayana is the claim that needs no herb at all: truthfulness, freedom from anger, non-violence, cleanliness, giving and contentment are said to yield what the best rejuvenative yields. Accept the equivalence or not, it is the only rasayana available to a person with no money.
