Vajikarana — The Science of Reproductive Vitality

Vajikarana is Ayurveda's eighth clinical specialty devoted to reproductive vitality, sexual medicine, and the enhancement of Shukra Dhatu — the ultimate expression of vital force in the body.

Vajikarana (from Vaji — horse, the symbol of virility and speed) is the Ayurvedic specialty concerned with reproductive health, sexual function, and the enhancement of Shukra Dhatu. It includes specific herbs, dietary protocols, lifestyle practices, and formulations for both men and women. Key Vajikarana herbs include Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens), Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), and Vidarikanda. The goals of Vajikarana extend beyond sexual performance to the enhancement of Ojas — since Shukra is the precursor of Ojas, Vajikarana ultimately serves spiritual development as well as physical vitality. Modern research has validated several Vajikarana herbs: Mucuna pruriens has been shown to improve sperm parameters and testosterone levels; Tribulus terrestris improves libido; Ashwagandha enhances both male and female sexual function.

Through Vajikarana, a man becomes vigorous as a horse, producing excellent offspring and experiencing the full joy of the householder's life.

A 2009 study in Fertility and Sterility showed that Mucuna pruriens (Kapikacchu) significantly improved sperm count, motility, and morphology, and reduced oxidative stress in infertile men — one of the strongest clinical validations of a Vajikarana herb.
