Bahá'í Faith

The Unknowable Essence

God's essential nature is beyond human comprehension; we know God only through divine attributes and the teachings of the Manifestations.

Bahá'u'lláh taught that God's essence is entirely beyond human understanding — so transcendent that no analogy, concept, or description can adequately capture the divine reality. Yet this unknowable God is not distant or indifferent but reaches humanity through divine attributes — love, mercy, power, knowledge — and through chosen Manifestations.

Too high art Thou for the tongue of man to voice Thy praise, or for the bird of the human mind to soar to the heaven of Thy knowledge.

Bahá'u'lláh, Prayers and Meditations

The apophatic theology of the Bahá'í Faith parallels similar traditions in Christian mysticism, Jewish Kabbalah, and Islamic Sufism.

  • What the Bahá'í Faith says about doubt

Some doubt is structural and will never clear. Bahá'u'lláh taught that God's essence is beyond any analogy or concept a human mind can form, which means no argument can deliver the sort of certainty people usually mean when they say they doubt.
