Bahá'í Faith

Abolition of Nationalism as a Barrier

Loyalty to one's nation is legitimate, but nationalism that divides humanity and generates hatred of others is a destructive ideology.

The Bahá'í writings distinguish legitimate loyalty to one's nation from nationalism as an ideology of exclusion and superiority. Patriotism — caring for one's community and contributing to its wellbeing — is good. Nationalism that generates contempt for other nations and provides ideological justification for war is a form of prejudice to be overcome.

The body of human knowledge is one indivisible whole. Its parts are bound together by an inseverable bond of inter-relationship and interdependence.

The Bahá'í distinction between patriotism and nationalism anticipates the debates in political philosophy between cosmopolitanism and nationalism.
