Bahá'í Faith

Stewardship of the Earth

Humanity is the steward of the natural world; environmental destruction contradicts the divine command to be trustees of creation.

The Bahá'í writings describe nature as an expression of divine beauty and humans as its trustees, not its owners. The destruction of natural environments for short-term gain violates this trusteeship. Environmental stewardship is a spiritual obligation, not merely a practical necessity.

It is not only our fight as inhabitants of this planet, but our responsibility as trustees of creation.

Bahá'í International Community, Statement on Nature

The Bahá'í environmental teaching connects spiritual trusteeship to practical ecological responsibility in a distinctive way.
