Bahá'í Faith

The Role of Religion in Society

Religion should be a cause of unity and love; if it becomes a source of division and hatred, better no religion at all.

Abdu'l-Bahá taught unequivocally that if religion sows discord, creates hatred, or becomes a justification for division and violence, it has betrayed its purpose. In such a case, irreligion is preferable to divisive religion. True religion always promotes love, unity, and the welfare of humanity.

If religion becomes the cause of hatred and disharmony, it would be better to have no religion at all.

Abdu'l-Bahá, Paris Talks

This remarkably self-critical religious teaching distinguishes the Bahá'í Faith's approach to religious identity from exclusivist traditions.
