Bahá'í Faith

Music and the Arts

Music and the arts are spiritual gifts; performed with pure motive, they uplift the soul and serve as forms of praise and worship.

Bahá'u'lláh blessed music as a ladder for the soul to ascend to God. All arts — music, poetry, painting, architecture — when pursued with pure motive and in the spirit of service, are sacred gifts. Bahá'í communities have been known for integrating beautiful music and the arts into devotional practice.

We have made music as a ladder for your souls, a means whereby they may be lifted up.

Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh

The Bahá'í affirmation of music as spiritual practice connects it to traditions across religions while avoiding the prohibitions found in some conservative interpretations.
