Bhagavad Gita

Sattva - The Mode of Goodness

Sattva, being purer than the others, illuminates and frees from sinful reactions, but binds through attachment to happiness and knowledge.

Sattva guna brings clarity, peace, wisdom, and ethical living. It is the gateway to spiritual growth. However, even sattva binds—one can become attached to peace, knowledge, and virtue themselves. The goal is not to rest in sattva but to transcend all three gunas. Yet sattva is the springboard for transcendence—from sattvic purity, the leap beyond all qualities becomes possible.

The mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge.

Lord Krishna, Bhagavad Gita 14.6

Sattva is both friend and subtle trap—the wise use it as a ladder, then kick it away upon reaching the roof of transcendence.
