Bhagavad Gita

Tamas - The Mode of Ignorance

Tamas, born of ignorance, deludes all living beings and binds through negligence, laziness, and sleep.

Tamas guna brings darkness, inertia, and delusion. It manifests as laziness, negligence, depression, and ignorance. Tamasic people avoid effort, seek escape through excessive sleep or substances, and remain blind to truth. While some rest is necessary, excessive tamas obscures consciousness. The way out is through rajas—activating the system—before rising to sattva. Movement precedes clarity.

The mode of ignorance causes the delusion of all living entities. The results of this mode are madness, indolence, and sleep, which bind the conditioned soul.

Lord Krishna, Bhagavad Gita 14.8

Depression often involves tamasic dominance—the prescription is movement and activity (rajas) to shift energy before cultivating clarity (sattva).
