Lughnasadh - First Harvest
The festival of Lugh, celebrating the first grain harvest and the sacrifice of the corn king.
Lughnasadh (August 1) honors Lugh and his foster mother Tailtiu, who died clearing the land for agriculture. It celebrates the first grain harvest, when the sun god dies into the grain that feeds the people. Games, fairs, and handfastings mark this festival.
The grain falls to the sickle that we might live; honor the sacrifice that sustains us.
Lughnasadh reveals Celtic understanding of necessary sacrifice and gratitude for sustenance.

The first grain is cut, and the festival is built around a death. Lugh's foster mother Tailtiu is said to have died clearing the land, so the abundance is presented as something somebody paid for.
