Celtic Wisdom

Epona - Great Mare

The horse goddess worshipped across the Celtic world, guardian of horses and travelers.

Epona was worshipped from Britain to Rome, the only Celtic goddess honored by the Roman cavalry. She protected horses, riders, and travelers. Images show her seated among horses or riding sidesaddle. She represents the sacred bond between humans and horses.

Epona rides with all who travel; her blessing guards the hooves that carry us.

Traditional, Gallo-Roman Tradition

Epona's widespread worship shows the central importance of horses to Celtic society.
