Balor of the Evil Eye

The Fomorian king whose eye destroyed all it beheld, overcome by his grandson Lugh.

Balor was king of the Fomorians, the chaotic giants. His eye, opened by four servants, killed all it gazed upon. Prophecy foretold his grandson would slay him, so he imprisoned his daughter - but Lugh was born anyway and fulfilled the prophecy.

No power, however destructive, can prevent the destined order from emerging.

Traditional, Cath Maige Tuired

  • What Celtic tradition says about envy and comparison

Balor shut his daughter in a tower to stop the prophecy that his grandson would kill him; Lugh was born regardless and killed him. The destroying eye belongs to the one trying to hold everything, and it fails.
