Blessed Are the Pure in Heart

Inner purity and single-minded devotion enable the vision of God.

Purity of heart means undivided loyalty to God—a heart free from the contamination of mixed motives and double-mindedness. The pure in heart see God not only in eternity but in the present moment, recognizing divine presence in all of life. This purity is not mere moral perfection but integrity—the alignment of inner life with outward action. Practice test: name what you would still want if God gave you nothing else. A divided answer is the impurity meant here. To see God requires clearing the lens of our hearts from the distortions of selfishness and sin.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Jesus Christ, Gospel of Matthew 5:8

Søren Kierkegaard wrote that 'purity of heart is to will one thing'—complete devotion to God that purifies all other desires.

Gospel of Matthew
