Blessed Are the Peacemakers

Those who actively create peace reflect God's character as His children.

Peacemakers don't merely keep peace but actively create it—reconciling enemies, healing divisions, and building bridges. They are called children of God because they participate in God's own work of reconciliation. Peace in the biblical sense (shalom) is not just absence of conflict but wholeness, flourishing, and right relationships. The word is peacemakers, not peace-lovers: the blessing falls on those who walk into the quarrel, not those who avoid it. Peacemaking requires courage, creativity, and willingness to absorb hostility without retaliation.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Jesus Christ, Gospel of Matthew 5:9

Martin Luther King Jr. declared that 'true peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice' and lived as a peacemaker through nonviolent resistance.

  • What Christianity says about forgiveness

The word is peacemakers, not peace-lovers; the blessing falls on those who walk into the quarrel rather than around it. Biblical peace is shalom — a restored relationship, not a truce. So forgiveness in this tradition aims at reconciliation, and honestly, often does not reach it.
