Salt of the Earth
Christians are called to preserve and season the world with God's truth and love.
Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth—a substance essential for preservation, flavoring, and healing in the ancient world. Salt that loses its saltiness is worthless, thrown out and trampled. This teaching challenges Christians to maintain their distinctive character and mission rather than blending invisibly into surrounding culture. The metaphor emphasizes active engagement with the world, not withdrawal from it. Salt was covenant language before it was metaphor: Leviticus 2:13 requires salt on every grain offering.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
Augustine taught that Christians prevent moral decay in society just as salt preserves meat, emphasizing the essential role of the church in the world.
