Fulfillment of the Law
Jesus came not to abolish but to fulfill the Law, revealing its deeper spiritual meaning.
Jesus declares he came to fulfill, not abolish, the Law and Prophets. This fulfillment deepens rather than negates—moving from external compliance to internal transformation. Murder extends to anger, adultery to lust, love of neighbor to love of enemies. The Law's true purpose was always to guide hearts toward God, not merely regulate behavior. This teaching establishes continuity with the Hebrew Scriptures while revealing their ultimate meaning in Christ. The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life—true righteousness exceeds mere rule-keeping.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Paul explained that Christ is 'the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes,' meaning both its goal and its fulfillment in him.
