The Mustard Seed
The Kingdom of God starts small but grows to provide shelter for all who seek refuge.
From the smallest of seeds grows a tree so large that birds nest in its branches. The Kingdom begins with tiny, seemingly insignificant beginnings—a handful of disciples, a single act of faith, a word of truth. Yet this small beginning contains unstoppable life that will eventually shelter nations. This parable encourages perseverance when results seem invisible and faith when evidence is lacking. Mustard grows as a garden shrub, not a tree. The outsized image is the point: the Kingdom outgrows its own category. Never despise small beginnings.
Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree.
Mother Teresa exemplified this teaching: 'We can do no great things, only small things with great love'—small seeds that grew into a worldwide movement.
