The Sower and the Seeds
The condition of the heart determines how God's word takes root and bears fruit.
A sower scatters seed on four types of soil: hard path, rocky ground, thorny ground, and good soil. Only the good soil produces abundant harvest. The seed is identical—God's word is powerful—but reception varies based on the condition of the heart. The path represents hardened hearts that reject the word immediately. Rocky ground depicts shallow enthusiasm that fades under pressure. Thorny ground shows hearts choked by worldly concerns. Good soil represents receptive hearts that understand, integrate, and multiply the truth. This parable invites self-examination of our heart's condition.
But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop.
Augustine taught that God's grace prepares the soil of the heart, making reception of the word possible through divine cultivation.
