The Narrow Door
Salvation requires deliberate choice and effort—the easy path leads to destruction.
Jesus teaches that the gate to life is narrow and the way difficult, while the road to destruction is wide and easy. Many try to enter through the narrow door and cannot because they try too late or on their own terms. This teaching counters easy believism—salvation is freely given but requires genuine response. The narrow way involves self-denial, obedience, and persistence. Few find it because few truly seek it. This parable calls for urgent decision rather than presumptuous delay, striving to enter while the door remains open.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer distinguished between cheap grace that demands nothing and costly grace that costs everything but gives eternal life.
