The Rich Man and Lazarus
Earthly wealth and poverty are reversed in eternity; respond to divine revelation now.
A rich man feasts lavishly while Lazarus, covered in sores, begs at his gate. Both die: Lazarus to Abraham's bosom, the rich man to torment. The rich man begs Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers, but Abraham replies, 'They have Moses and the Prophets.' This parable teaches that eternal destinies are sealed by earthly choices. Indifference to suffering while living in luxury has eternal consequences. No posthumous evangelism occurs—respond to the revelation already given. The chasm fixed at death cannot be crossed.
If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.
C.S. Lewis noted that 'there are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, Thy will be done, and those to whom God says, Thy will be done.'
