Christian Mysticism

Be Doers of the Word

Hearing God's Word without practicing it is self-deception; action demonstrates true faith.

James warns, 'Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.' He compares hearing without doing to looking in a mirror and immediately forgetting what you look like. True religion includes action: caring for orphans and widows, controlling the tongue, keeping unstained by the world. Knowledge without application puffs up; obedience transforms. This teaching echoes Jesus's parable of the wise and foolish builders. The goal of Scripture is not information but transformation through obedient response.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

James the Apostle, James 1:22

Søren Kierkegaard criticized 'Christianity without Christ'—intellectual assent to doctrine without life-transforming obedience to Christ.
