True friendship is based on mutual cultivation of virtue.
Confucius valued friendship as essential for moral development. Friends should be of good character and help each other grow in virtue. Friendship based on advantage is not true friendship.
Have no friends not equal to yourself.
Friendship should support moral cultivation.
Analects
