The Junzi - Exemplary Person

The ideal of the noble or superior person that all should aspire to.

The junzi (often translated as 'gentleman' or 'exemplary person') is the Confucian moral ideal. Originally referring to nobility by birth, Confucius redefined it as nobility of character available to all through cultivation.

The exemplary person seeks virtue; the small person seeks favors.

Confucius, Analects 4.11

The junzi ideal democratized moral nobility.
