Confucianism

Contrasted with Xiaoren

The junzi is the opposite of the small or petty person.

The xiaoren (small person) is the junzi's opposite - focused on profit rather than righteousness, comfort rather than virtue, appearances rather than substance. Everyone chooses which to become.

The junzi thinks of virtue; the xiaoren thinks of land. The junzi thinks of law; the xiaoren thinks of favors.

Confucius, Analects 4.11

The contrast highlights moral choices each person faces.
