Achamoth — The Lower Sophia
Achamoth is the lower Sophia in Valentinian Gnosticism — the divine Aeon who falls from the Pleroma and whose suffering and repentance generates the material world.
Achamoth (from Hebrew Chokhmah — Wisdom) is Valentinus's term for the lower Sophia who falls and is exiled from the Pleroma. Her fall occurs through excessive desire (to know the Father directly without the mediation of Nous) — this desire, mixed with ignorance, produces a formless substance (the hysterema — deficiency) that is eventually shaped into the material world. Achamoth's sufferings — grief, fear, confusion, and ignorance — become the building blocks of matter: grief becomes the material from which earth is made; fear becomes water; confusion becomes air; and the conversion of these passions toward spiritual longing becomes the element of fire. This remarkable psycho-cosmology suggests that the material world is literally made of suffering — and that the path of Gnostic salvation involves the recognition and redemption of this suffering through the restoration of Sophia to the Pleroma.
From Sophia's grief came the earth; from her fear, the water; from her confusion, the air; from her turning, the fire.
Scholar Gilles Quispel noted that the Valentinian Sophia myth represents one of the most psychologically sophisticated accounts of the origin of suffering in ancient literature — matter as crystallized trauma anticipates depth psychology's understanding of how unexpressed emotional experience becomes embedded in the body and world.

- What Gnosticism says about starting again after a fall
What she produced was not punished away; it was built with. Irenaeus reports the Valentinian claim that her grief became earth, her fear water, her confusion air, and her turning toward the light became fire. The ground you stand on is, in this system, a fall that got used for something.
