The Fall into Matter — The Exile
The Gnostic myth of the fall into matter narrates how divine sparks became trapped in material existence — not through sin but through cosmic accident, betrayal by the Demiurge, or Sophia's error.
The Gnostic narrative of the fall into matter differs profoundly from the Genesis account. The fall is not the result of human disobedience but of a cosmic event in the divine realm — Sophia's error, the Demiurge's ignorant creation, or some pre-cosmic entrapment of divine sparks in material form. The result is that portions of divine light (pneuma — spirit) became ensnared in material bodies and psychic (soul) structures, losing awareness of their true origin. The condition of the typical human being is therefore one of radical alienation — an exile from the divine homeland who has forgotten that they are an exile. The Gnostic spiritual path begins with the shock of recognition that one does not belong here — the 'alien' feeling of the pneumatic soul that senses its incompatibility with the material world is the first stirring of Gnosis. The Hymn of the Pearl dramatizes this: the divine heir descends, forgets his mission, and must be awakened by a letter from home.
I forgot that I was a son of the King, and I served their king. I forgot my pearl for which my parents had sent me.
Philosopher Hans Jonas characterized the fundamental Gnostic mood as 'the alien' — the pneumatic soul's sense of not belonging to this world, of being a stranger in an alien cosmos, which Jonas saw as a distinctive religious experience arising in the crisis of the Hellenistic world.

- What Gnosticism says about fate
You are not blamed for being here. The cause is placed before you, in an error or accident in the divine realm, which is a sharp difference from the Genesis account of a human fall.
- What Gnosticism says about loneliness
Gnostic writers rejected the Genesis account in which the fall is human disobedience; they said divine sparks were stranded here by a cosmic event nobody present agreed to. That makes the alien feeling evidence rather than a symptom. The Hymn of the Pearl calls it forgetting you are a king's son.
