Shahada - Declaration of Faith
The foundational testimony that 'There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger' - the cornerstone of Islamic belief.
The Shahada (الشهادة) is the first and most fundamental pillar of Islam, declaring the absolute oneness of God (Tawhid) and the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH). This declaration transforms one's entire existence, establishing the relationship between the Creator and creation. Saying the Shahada with sincere conviction is the gateway to Islam. The first part, 'La ilaha illa Allah,' negates all false deities and affirms that only Allah deserves worship. The second part acknowledges Muhammad as the final messenger. The Shahada is recited in the adhan and within every one of the five daily prayers.
There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Al-Ghazali wrote that the Shahada is not merely spoken by the tongue but must be affirmed by the heart and demonstrated through action. It represents the soul's recognition of its Creator.
