Niyyah - The Power of Intention
The essential role of sincere intention in validating all acts of worship and daily life.
Niyyah (النية) is the intention that precedes and gives meaning to every action in Islam. The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Actions are judged by intentions, and everyone shall have what they intended.' Without proper intention, even the most outwardly perfect worship may be rejected. Niyyah transforms ordinary activities into worship when done for Allah's sake—eating, sleeping, working, all become ibadah (worship) with the right intention. This teaching recognizes the primacy of the heart's sincerity over outward form. This hadith opens Imam al-Nawawi's celebrated collection of Forty Hadith.
Actions are but by intentions, and every person shall have only that which they intended.
Al-Ghazali placed niyyah at the center of his spiritual teaching, stating that the inner reality of the heart is what truly matters to Allah, not the outer appearance of actions.
