Trials as Divine Test - Ibtila
Understanding hardships as tests from Allah that purify the soul and elevate spiritual rank.
Ibtila (الابتلاء) is the divine testing through which Allah examines and purifies believers. The Quran states: 'Do people think they will be left to say "We believe" and not be tested?' Tests come in many forms—loss, illness, fear, hunger, and even success and abundance. The purpose is not punishment but purification and elevation. The Prophet (PBUH) said the greatest trials befall the prophets, then those nearest to them in faith. Passing tests with patience and gratitude brings immense reward and spiritual growth. Every difficulty contains hidden wisdom.
Do people think they will be left alone because they say 'We believe' and not be tested?
Rumi taught that trials are Allah's way of clearing our hearts of what is not essential—like the goldsmith who heats gold to remove impurities.

- What Islam says about patience
Before patience is asked for, Islam explains why there is anything to be patient about: people are not left alone merely for saying 'We believe' without being tested. The listed forms of test include loss, fear and hunger — and also success and abundance, which is the harder half to accept as a test at all.
