The Straight Path - Sirat al-Mustaqim
The direct path to Allah that believers pray to be guided upon in every prayer.
Sirat al-Mustaqim (الصراط المستقيم) is the straight path mentioned in every recitation of Al-Fatihah. It represents the path of those whom Allah has blessed—the prophets, truthful ones, martyrs, and righteous. This path is straight in that it leads directly to Allah without deviation, balanced in that it avoids all extremes. The Prophet (PBUH) drew a line in the sand with smaller lines branching off, explaining that the straight path has many deviations that lead astray. Guidance to this path is the believer's greatest need and greatest blessing.
Guide us to the straight path—the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked anger or of those who are astray.
Ibn Qayyim described the straight path as having a beginning (repentance), a journey (steadfastness), and an end (meeting Allah)—each step requiring divine guidance.
