Honoring Parents - Birr al-Walidayn

The sacred duty to honor, respect, and care for one's parents throughout their lives.

Birr al-Walidayn (بر الوالدين) is the duty of kindness to parents, mentioned in the Quran directly after the command to worship Allah alone. 'And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be dutiful to parents.' Even if parents are non-Muslim, a child must treat them with kindness and respect (though not obeying them in matters against Islam). The Prophet (PBUH) said Paradise lies at the feet of mothers. Serving elderly parents is considered among the greatest acts of worship, and treating them harshly is among the major sins.

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be dutiful to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them a word of disrespect.

Quran, Surah Al-Isra 17:23

Scholars explain that honoring parents continues even after their death through prayer, charity, fulfilling their commitments, and maintaining ties with their friends.
