Love for Others What You Love for Yourself
The golden rule of Islam: wishing for others what one desires for oneself.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.' This hadith establishes the golden rule as a measure of true faith. It goes beyond mere non-harm to positive benevolence—actively wishing good for others. 'Brother' extends to all humanity in its broader meaning. This principle transforms competition into cooperation, envy into celebration, and selfishness into generosity. This hadith is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, in the Book of Faith.
None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.
Al-Nawawi noted that this hadith completes faith because it purifies the heart from envy, selfishness, and ill-will toward others.
