Smiling is Charity

The teaching that a simple smile to your brother is an act of charity rewarded by Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'Your smile in the face of your brother is charity.' This hadith democratizes charity—everyone can give, regardless of wealth. A smile costs nothing but spreads warmth, connection, and positivity. The Prophet was known for his frequent smiling and pleasant demeanor. This teaching transforms social interaction into worship. Combined with other 'free' charities like kind words and helpful actions, it creates a culture where everyone can contribute to community well-being.

Your smile in the face of your brother is charity.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 27, Hadith 1956

Abdullah ibn Harith said: 'I have never seen anyone smile more than the Prophet (PBUH).' His smile was not superficial but reflected genuine warmth and concern for people.

  • What Islam says about gratitude

A smile at another person is counted as charity. It is the smallest item here and it sets the floor: there is no situation in which nothing at all can be given.
