The World is a Place of Trial

The teaching that worldly life is temporary and a test for the eternal life to come.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler.' This hadith teaches detachment from worldly preoccupation while remaining engaged. A traveler uses amenities but doesn't become attached because they know their journey continues. Similarly, believers use the world without being enslaved to it. This perspective reduces anxiety about material loss and redirects focus to eternal investment. It doesn't mean neglecting worldly duties but approaching them with perspective and proportion.

Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih Bukhari, Book 81, Hadith 6416

Ibn Umar (RA) added: 'If you reach the evening, do not expect the morning; and if you reach the morning, do not expect the evening.'

Sahih Bukhari

  • What Islam says about patience

The instruction to be in this world as a stranger or a traveller is a scale adjustment. A traveller uses the room without repainting it. Applied to whatever you are enduring, it does not make the loss smaller; it makes the term shorter.
