Tawadu' - Humility

The quality of recognizing one's place before Allah and treating others without arrogance.

Tawadu' (التواضع) is humility before Allah and with people. The Prophet (PBUH) said Allah raises whoever humbles themselves for His sake. Humility is not self-deprecation but accurate self-assessment—recognizing that all gifts are from Allah and all humans share the same origin. The Prophet mended his own shoes, served his family, and sat wherever there was space. Arrogance (kibr) is among the most dangerous sins—even an atom's weight of it prevents Paradise. True humility creates genuine relationships and opens hearts to learning and growth.

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility.

Quran, Surah Al-Furqan 25:63

Al-Ghazali wrote that humility is knowing your true rank before Allah—neither exaggerating your worth nor denying His gifts. It is truth, not false modesty.
