Khushu' - Humility in Prayer

The state of complete concentration and humility of heart during prayer.

Khushu' (الخشوع) is the presence of heart and humility of soul during worship, particularly prayer. The Quran says: 'Successful indeed are the believers who are humble in their prayers.' Khushu' means the heart is focused on Allah, the body is still, and the mind is not wandering. Without khushu', prayer becomes empty movements. The Prophet (PBUH) wept in prayer, and his heart trembled with awareness of Allah's presence. Cultivating khushu' requires understanding the words of prayer, minimizing distractions, and approaching prayer as a meeting with the Creator.

Successful indeed are the believers who are humble in their prayers.

Quran, Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2

Al-Ghazali wrote extensively on khushu', teaching that it is the soul of prayer—prayer without khushu' is like a body without life.
