Qiyam al-Layl - The Night Prayer

The voluntary prayer performed during the night that brings special closeness to Allah.

Qiyam al-Layl (قيام الليل) is standing in prayer during the night, a highly recommended practice that brings special closeness to Allah. The Quran describes it as a time when 'the soul is most receptive and words more impactful.' The last third of the night, before Fajr, is when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks: 'Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that I may forgive? Is there anyone asking that I may give?' This practice develops discipline, creates quiet intimacy with Allah, and distinguishes the devout. The Prophet (PBUH) never abandoned it.

And from the night, pray with it as an additional worship for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.

Quran, Surah Al-Isra 17:79

The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.' It was his regular practice until his feet swelled, yet he found joy in this intimate worship.
