Taqwa - God-Consciousness

The comprehensive awareness of Allah that guides all actions and protects from sin.

Taqwa (التقوى) is often translated as 'fear of Allah' but more accurately means God-consciousness—constant awareness of Allah that guides behavior. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes taqwa, promising that 'the most noble of you is the most God-conscious.' Taqwa creates an internal moral compass that prevents sin even when unseen. It is described as placing a protective barrier between oneself and Allah's displeasure. Taqwa develops through worship, knowledge, and practice until God-awareness becomes habitual. The muttaqun (God-conscious) are promised Paradise and divine support.

O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims.

Quran, Surah Ali 'Imran 3:102

Ali ibn Abi Talib defined taqwa as: 'Fear of the Most High, acting on revelation, contentment with little, and preparation for the Day of Departure.'
