Fana - Spiritual Annihilation
The advanced spiritual state of losing self-awareness in awareness of Allah.
Fana (الفناء) is the mystical state of 'annihilation' of the ego-self in the divine presence. It does not mean physical annihilation but the fading of self-consciousness before overwhelming God-consciousness. The one experiencing fana becomes absorbed in awareness of Allah to the point of forgetting themselves. This is followed by baqa (subsistence)—returning to creation while maintaining divine connection. Fana is described by Sufis as the death of the lower self (nafs) that allows the spirit (ruh) to flourish. It represents complete tawhid—seeing only Allah in all things.
Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
Rumi wrote: 'Die before you die and find that there is no death.' Fana is dying to the false self and being reborn in divine awareness.
