Mahabbah - Divine Love

The highest spiritual station of loving Allah completely and being loved by Him.

Mahabbah (المحبة) is love—specifically, love of Allah and love from Allah. The Quran describes the believers as 'those who love Allah intensely' and promises that Allah loves the righteous, the patient, those who trust in Him, and those who purify themselves. Love transforms obedience from burden to delight. The Prophet (PBUH) loved Allah and the prayer more than anything. Sufi tradition developed the theology of mahabbah extensively, seeing the spiritual journey as essentially about love—loving Allah until nothing remains but Him. Mahabbah is considered the highest station, the goal of all spiritual striving.

Say, if you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Quran, Surah Ali 'Imran 3:31

Rumi wrote: 'Love is the bridge between you and everything.' The journey to Allah is walked on the path of love—loving Him leads to being loved by Him, the greatest achievement.
