The Four Directions
The sacred cardinal points that organize space and anchor creation.
The four directions - East (red, sunrise), West (black, sunset), North (white, the sky), and South (yellow, the underworld) - establish the framework of space. At each corner stand the Bacabs, the god-bearers who hold up the sky. The center is the fifth direction, where all converge.
The four corners were established, the four sides measured and staked.
The four directions provided the spatial framework for all Mayan ritual and architecture.
