Love as Absorption
The tenth form is total absorption, in which the devotee's consciousness is so merged in the beloved that nothing else remains.
Tanmayata-asakti is the love of complete absorption, in which the devotee becomes so saturated with the beloved that the sense of a separate self nearly dissolves into the object of love. Here bhakti approaches the non-dual: the lover, the loving, and the beloved tend toward oneness, as a salt doll dissolves in the ocean it sought to measure. This is the fruit toward which the other moods ripen — a love so complete that it becomes union. The absorbed devotee is described as forgetting the world, the body, and even themselves, conscious only of the beloved. This form reveals that the height of devotion and the height of knowledge meet. In perfect love, the distance the lover began with is at last consumed entirely.
And some love Him with such absorption that they are wholly merged in Him.
The convergence of devotional love and non-dual union at the summit of bhakti parallels the highest stages of Sufi fana (annihilation in God) and the Christian mystical theology of deifying union described by Meister Eckhart.
