Frith - Peace and Harmony

Maintain peace within the community; frith is the sacred peace that binds society together.

Frith was the sacred peace within a household or community. It meant more than absence of conflict - it was active harmony, mutual support, and shared prosperity. Breaking frith was among the worst offenses, as it tore the social fabric.

Better to have peace than endless feuding; even the mightiest grows weary of war.

Traditional, Norse Oral Tradition

Frith was essential for the functioning of Norse household and community life.

  • What Norse wisdom says about friendship

Frith is the household peace that individual friendships sit inside, and it means active mutual support, not merely the absence of fighting. It also explains why a private quarrel was everyone's business: breaking frith tore something larger than the two people in it.

  • What Norse wisdom says about being wronged

Frith is the direct counterweight: better peace than endless feuding, since even the mightiest grows weary of war. It names what the vengeance rule cannot see — that a justified feud can still leave everyone in the hall poorer than before it started.
