Words as Weapons
A warrior must be skilled in flyting - verbal combat that could wound as deeply as swords.
Norse warriors engaged in flyting, ritualized verbal combat using insults, boasts, and wit. A skilled flyting tongue could damage reputation as surely as a sword. Words were weapons that complemented physical prowess.
The tongue can cut deeper than the sword; master both if you would be truly dangerous.
Verbal combat was an integral part of Norse warrior culture.

- What Norse wisdom says about what to say and what to leave unsaid
Here the tradition contradicts itself, and the contradiction is worth stating plainly. Flyting — formal insult-duelling, of which the Lokasenna is the surviving showpiece — was a prized skill, and a cutting tongue counted as a weapon beside the sword. The Havamal's counsel of silence and the hall's appetite for a well-aimed insult were never reconciled.
