Hel - The Realm of the Dead

Those who die of illness or old age go to Hel, ruled by the goddess of the same name.

Hel is the realm of those who die outside of battle - from illness, old age, or accident. It is ruled by Hel, daughter of Loki. Unlike Christian hell, Hel is not punishment but simply the destination of the non-heroic dead, a shadowy afterlife.

To Hel go all who do not die in battle; there in the cold realm they await the end.

Traditional, Prose Edda

Hel represents the ordinary afterlife, contrasted with Valhalla's heroic destiny.
