Stoicism

Living According to Nature

The highest human aim is to live in accordance with nature, meaning in harmony with reason, which is humanity's distinctive nature.

The Stoic maxim 'live according to nature' does not mean returning to wilderness but living in accordance with our rational nature. Human beings are naturally social and rational; flourishing means fully expressing these capacities. This aligns personal development with the rational order of the cosmos.

Live according to nature.

Zeno of Citium, Lives of Eminent Philosophers, 7.87

This foundational principle bridges Stoic cosmology and ethics, grounding human good in the rational structure of the universe.
