Stoicism

Honesty and Integrity

The Stoic sage speaks truth, keeps promises, and acts with complete integrity, as the soul's virtue must match its outward expression.

For Stoics, honesty is not merely a social convention but a requirement of rational nature. Deception corrupts the rational faculty and violates justice by misusing others as mere means. The Stoic commits to full alignment between inner conviction and outer expression.

If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 12

Stoic honesty is grounded in respect for reason — one's own and others' — making it both self-regarding and other-regarding.
